in Lausanne, I made a U-turn and decided to study forensic sciences in Ecole des Sciences Criminelles (ESC) at University of Lausanne to bring together my interests in science and law. It was during my second year of university, with an introductory course in digital forensic, that I discovered this universe almost by chance. I was quickly fascinated by the fact that digital traces were at once just a field of forensic sciences like any other but also a field that required an understanding of many aspects related to computer science.

Driven by my curiosity, I did a Bachelor’s thesis which focused on fuzzy hashing. This experience convinced me that I liked the field of digital forensics and that I wanted to improve myself in it. After obtaining my Bachelor in Forensic Sciences, I chose to do a Master degree in Forensic Sciences with an orientation in digital investigation and identification. I had the great opportunity to complete my Master’s thesis at the Operational Security Center (SOC) of the Canton of Vaud. This project – developing an approach based on DNS logs to detect malicious events – allowed me to combine my knowledge of digital forensics and data analysis to apply them to the new area that cybersecurity was for me.

Following the very positive result of this collaboration, I was able to stay in the Canton of Vaud and join the SOC team as an analyst. Today, I can apply the methodology and knowledge acquired during my studies to the investigation of security incidents, and take advantage of the multidisciplinary approach that is developed there to bring complementary vision and strengths to the team.

Close

×
Fabien Leimgruber

Fabien is the Cyber Volunteers Manager of the CyberPeace Institute – he is responsible for the smooth running of the Institute worldwide volunteering initiative aiming to deliver assistance to vulnerable populations.

He started his career working for the Swiss Government.
